I was chatting with a friend from my ILCS group last night and she was trying to help with ways to get Devin reading. I appreciate any ideas people can give me.
Well, I have decided to post his time line, shall we say, things that might be a important clue to his learning disability. And before I start to forget some of them.
Devin was born three weeks early and was breech. I had to have a C section because he pushed his hand out but his head was in my side. They said basically he was in a swimmers pike position.
At first everything seemed normal. Except he would choke on his formula. But soon we noticed that he was lagging behind in some physical motor skills. He could not hold his head up, when he should have been able too. We talked with the Doc's and they said all babies were different and we should not compare him to Stone. Well, that was not the case because Stone could hold his head up the second week. Devin was now about 3 months old.
Well he finally gets the head thing working but by 7 months he still can not sit up on his own.
Again talk with the Doc's, they say the same thing as before. So I tell them look I am not comparing to Stone, I know he was way advanced, second week head control, four weeks standing on his feet. And by six weeks demanding to be on his feet. So they have us see a development Doctor. She finds the Devin has muscle delay. She states they see this a lot with breech babies. She advises that he will probably not walk until he is 18 months.
Devin finally learn to sit up at 9 months and and than crawled soon after. Then to the amazement of all he walk at 12 months. He still did not have good muscles, but he was determined.
From here he appeared to be developing normally. But by the age of two he only had a vocabulary of 5 words. And he would not parrot you. If you said say "cup", he would just stare at you. Most of our communication was his sign language. Then he just started talking and talking. The flood gates finally opened. Next, we thought he might be color blind as he could not learn his colors. Nope not color blind, finally learned his colors half way though kindergarten. So about three years to learn colors. Will guess you can figure out how the ABC's went too.
To start kindergarten the school requires the kids to be able to write their name. OK, Great. Kid can not even say the ABC's, but I set about teaching him to write his name, Write a D, Write a E....... And he starts school being able to write his name. Then the teacher says, we are going to start with having the kids spell their first and last names. And my face dropped. She asks what is the problem. So I explain, Devin can write his name but can not spell it. OMG she says and her face dropped.
Devin has been in resource room, twice a day since first grade and still reads at a first grade level.
I will never forget the day Devin asked me this question.
Mom, how can you and Stone sing along with the music? How do you answer that?
At that point it hits you as to how bad a problem while is.
Devin has been tested and does not have ADD, ADHD, or any other problems. The only thing they saw with the last test was when asked to draw a picture of a picture in front of him. Let's say two square's side by side. He draw them on top and bottom.
So looking at possibly severe dyslexia. Socially he is where he should be.
