Drama of the day - Missing baby

Sadly, this baby did not make it. It died at 2pm today, in my hand. I was not holding out to much hope as it was really small and thin. It reminded me of a peanut but just older. Even with my hand feeding, I could not get a belly on it. I tried my best to save it. But I guess God has other plans for it.

We did have another scare this morning. I was going out to get them for feeding. So, I turned on the monitor to check what Mom was doing. (We have a video camera set up. This is so when they are delivering, I can watch the mom's for problems from inside the house, and I don't have to keep going out, to check on them. Mom's get nervous when you come around them.) I went to walk outside and noticed mom was in the box. Then Dan asked, "Are they(babies) supposed to be out of the box?" I looked at the monitor and sure enough, one baby was out. So, I go out to put it in the box. When I opened the cage, mom was going crazy. I look in the box and one baby is MISSING!!! I pulled the box out and started digging through the straw to see if maybe it was just hidden. But no luck. Now the frantic search begins.

I grabbed a flashlight, and start looking under the cages, freezer, shelves(holding rabbit supplies) Let me explain, our deck is 26x12, enclosed and has been the dumping ground lately. So, Dan starts pulling stuff off the deck as I am crawling on the floor looking under everything. Finally, I find it half way across the deck from the cages.

We still do not know how it get out of the cage, and lucky survived the fall. Mom is still pissed. Like we stole her baby. Well, she is called Ms. Nasty for a reason. I have put of piece of wood in the front of the cage as that is the only place it might have got out. There are urine guards on the other sides. Will try and come up with a better solution tomorrow. My nerves are shot today.

Babies are still, somehow, getting out of the nest box. The little *&^%$# 's Don't know where the little blind babies, think they are going.
